Led by Dr. Jack Castro, Brandywine Valley Psychiatry focuses on treating a wide range of psychiatric conditions, including anxiety, depression, ADHD, panic attacks, and bipolar disorder. Additionally, he assists patients who have already been prescribed medication by other providers but have not yet achieved optimal symptom control or are experiencing side effects. Dr. Castro helps these individuals adjust their treatment programs to enhance symptom management and effectively manage any adverse effects.
The initial diagnostic evaluation typically lasts between 60 to 90 minutes. During this important first meeting, the primary objective is to identify and understand the specific issues and symptoms that require attention. The comprehensive treatment plan that follows may incorporate various components such as blood work, psychotherapy, medication management, and potentially TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) if deemed appropriate.
It's important to note that the purpose of this initial evaluation is to provide a diagnostic assessment and propose a preliminary treatment plan. It does not automatically imply that medication will be initiated. Dr. Castro recognizes the significance of a thoughtful and individualized approach to treatment, taking into account the unique needs and preferences of each patient. Therefore, decisions regarding medication will be based on a collaborative discussion and mutual agreement between the patient and Dr. Castro.
Follow-up meetings are typically 30 minutes long, allowing Dr. Castro to assess your progress and make necessary adjustments to your treatment plan. During these sessions, we will discuss the effectiveness of any prescribed medication, considering whether to increase the dosage for better symptom control or address any side effects by adjusting the dosage or exploring alternative medications.
These follow-up appointments also provide an opportunity for you to raise any concerns or questions you may have. Dr. Castro will carefully listen to your feedback, monitor your progress, and work collaboratively with you to ensure that your treatment plan remains personalized and effective. Maintaining an ongoing therapeutic relationship is key to supporting your well-being and achieving optimal outcomes.
I want to thank you for your interest in my practice. This information has been prepared so that you can have a better idea of my professional background and approach to mental health.
I am a psychiatrist who works mainly with adults of all ages and teenagers with various psychiatric problems. I generally don’t treat children. I provide comprehensive psychiatric evaluations as well as evidenced and empirically-based medication management treatment for my patients. I consider my approach to be psychopharmacologically conservative and minimalist. What this means is that I aim to use as little medication as possible, and recommend that my patients have a psychotherapist as well. I have a network of excellent therapists that include social workers, counselors, coaches and psychologists with whom I work closely. This strategy helps my patients rely more on their own untapped psychological tools.
I am originally from Venezuela, where I went to medical school. I completed a 4-year residency in Manhattan at Metropolitan Hospital Center which is affiliated with New York Medical College. I then continued training at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx and completed a 1-year fellowship in psychosomatic medicine and a second 1-year fellowship in geriatric psychiatry. After a total of 6 years of postgraduate training, I worked as an attending psychiatrist in Montefiore Medical Group collaborating closely with internists, family physicians and residents in training. I am fluent both in English and Spanish.
My areas of expertise include depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, substance abuse, OCD, ADHD, PTSD and psychotic disorders. I have been in private practice at my current location in Wilmington, DE since 2017.
I am "triple-boarded" by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in general adult psychiatry, psychosomatic medicine and geriatric psychiatry. I hold unrestricted license to practice psychiatry in Delaware and Pennsylvania.
Say hello to Sophia and Isabela! They love to come in on weekends to run around the office while Dr. Castro catches up on paperwork and administrative duties. Their current job description is painting walls, shredding documents, and making him laugh.
In addition to his psychiatrist practice, Dr. Castro helps patients who suffer from treatment resistant depression. TMS Therapy is a non-invasive, non-sedative, FDA-approved treatment with little to no side effects. Unlike mental health medications that can often cause a myriad of unwanted side effects, TMS therapy allows you to feel like your best self immediately after treatment sessions. Some patients begin to notice positive changes by the third week of treatment, sometimes much sooner.
In fact, TMS is well-known for being an exceptional option for those who don't respond well to mental health prescriptions. Why? Because research often associates an under-active prefrontal cortex with depression, and other mental health conditions, and TMS boosts this functioning in a new, and effective, way.
The effective, safe, FDA-approved care you deserve.
